India’s First Successful Births Using Stem Cell Therapy for Severe Asherman’s Syndrome

Stem Cell Therapy Enables India’s First Successful Births in Severe Asherman’s Syndrome

A groundbreaking achievement in reproductive medicine has brought new hope to women suffering from severe infertility. Doctors at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital in New Delhi have reported India’s first successful live births following stem cell therapy for severe Asherman’s Syndrome, marking a significant advancement in fertility treatment.

The innovative treatment was led by Dr. Abha Majumdar, Director of the Centre of IVF and Human Reproduction. Her team used umbilical cord-derived mesenchymal stem cells to repair damaged uterine tissue and restore the endometrial lining necessary for pregnancy.

Understanding Asherman’s Syndrome

Asherman’s Syndrome is a serious condition in which scar tissue forms inside the uterus, leading to partial or complete blockage of the uterine cavity. This condition often develops after procedures such as dilation and curettage, uterine infections, or surgeries.

In severe cases, the uterine lining becomes too damaged to support pregnancy, leaving women with very limited reproductive options. Many patients previously had to rely on surrogacy or adoption.

How Stem Cell Therapy Works

To overcome this challenge, doctors used mesenchymal stem cells derived from Wharton’s jelly of the umbilical cord, known for their regenerative capacity.

During the procedure:

  1. Stem cells are collected from umbilical cord tissue.

  2. The cells are injected directly beneath the endometrium using hysteroscopic guidance.

  3. These cells stimulate tissue regeneration and help rebuild the uterine lining.

The therapy specifically targets the basal layer of the uterus, which is responsible for regenerating the endometrial lining. This allows the uterus to regain its ability to support implantation and pregnancy.

Successful Births: Case Outcomes

The treatment was part of a clinical trial involving ten patients suffering from severe Asherman’s Syndrome.

Two patients have already delivered healthy babies:

  • Case 1: A 39-year-old woman with severe uterine adhesions delivered a healthy baby boy at 35 weeks, weighing 2 kg.

  • Case 2: A 40-year-old woman with recurrent pregnancy loss delivered a healthy baby girl at 31 weeks, weighing 1.8 kg.

Following stem cell therapy, both women experienced improvement in menstrual flow, increased endometrial thickness, and reduction in uterine adhesions, making pregnancy possible.

A New Hope for Women with Infertility

This breakthrough demonstrates the potential of regenerative medicine in fertility treatment. By repairing damaged uterine tissue, stem cell therapy could offer new hope to thousands of women who previously had little chance of conceiving naturally.

Researchers believe that if ongoing clinical trials continue to show positive results, this therapy could become a transformative treatment for severe infertility worldwide.
